Jam Chart for Roggae (26 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
1998-06-30 Copenhagen, Denmark 6:31 Debut.
1998-07-06 Prague, Czech Republic 8:06 A more rhythmic and energized jam section than later versions. Great Fish and Trey.
1998-07-31 Columbus, OH 8:34 More relaxed and cerebral than the version from Prague, this style for the jam section would become typical for most versions through late '00.
1999-07-01 Antioch, TN 9:31 Jerry Douglas on dobro, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Tim O'Brien on fiddle. A wonderful version.
1999-07-10 Camden, NJ 7:46 -> in from an awesome "CDT." Some cool strumming by Mike and really the first version to mix the jam up a little.
2000-09-09 Albany, NY 8:15 Great Mike and Page in a version that opens up the jam section to interpretation rather than static melodic repetition.
2000-09-30 Las Vegas, NV 8:21 A more ranging and interesting jam than any performed up until this date. It's also blissfully serene and delicate. All performances after these September '00 versions would feature much greater variation in the jam.
2003-01-04 Hampton, VA 9:25 Outstanding version combines exceptional Trey soloing, strong Page/Trey back-and-forth, and excellent dynamics modulation driven by Fish and Mike. This one will make you weep with joy.
2003-02-26 Worcester, MA 8:26 Fantastic version similar to a standout "Taste" or "LxL" with great Page/Trey interplay, and Mike is also great. Their collective restraint and nimble precision, really full-on musicianship, make this a jam of beauty.
2003-07-18 East Troy, WI 8:28 Another great version, but vastly different from the preceding two. This is much more of a high power, rocking jam.
2004-04-15 Las Vegas, NV 9:17 The jam starts off in very fine fashion, with a cool and different groove, but then veers increasingly toward chaotic dissonance. This darker sentiment is underscored by Page who shifts his harmonic underpinnings to minor mode.
2010-08-12 Noblesville, IN 9:25 Very good, upbeat and crescendo oriented jam section.
2010-12-27 Worcester, MA 9:53 Intense, somewhat dissonant jam provides a sharp stylistic contrast to the celebratory rendering from 8/12/10.
2011-08-05 George, WA 11:17 After skirting around the periphery of "Roggae," the jam eventually makes a clean break at about 7:30 into a somewhat rocking, somewhat bluesy jam with excellent Fish and Mike.
2011-09-04 Commerce City, CO 7:59 > in from an inspired "Hood." A high powered, joyfully played jam continues the "feel good" from "Hood." > to "Ghost."
2012-08-19 San Francisco, CA 8:28 Really a beautifully played and moving version from a great show.
2013-08-02 San Francisco, CA 9:06 Another great "Roggae" from SF, with strong melodic and instrumental variation. Just wish they would play this more often.
2013-10-18 Hampton, VA 9:18 The jam builds to a peak, seemingly to conclude, then settles briefly before rebuilding to a second peak.
2013-11-02 Atlantic City, NJ 7:36 A delicate and beautifully played version with a dreamy quality to it, but which also builds to a powerful peak. > to "Waves."
2014-07-19 Chicago, IL 8:14 A stunning "Type I" version: Page teases "Dirt," then Trey takes the helm joined by Mike, who adds some thunderous double-time riffs which Fish echoes, all leading to a great peak.
2014-07-26 Columbia, MD 9:05 Another strong version, but this one is all about Trey, who deftly winds the melody and chords beautifully at the peak.
2015-07-25 Inglewood, CA 9:30 Trey, Page, and Mike weave in, out, and around each other harmoniously throughout this entire breathtaking jam, while Fish holds down the fort and leads them to a glorious peak. > "BDTNL" for CK5's birthday.
2015-08-15 Columbia, MD 8:57 Phish has certainly got "Roggae" dialed in at this point in time. This version is heartfelt, soulful, and beautifully played. Trey uses no effects, resulting in a natural sounding jam, and he picks his notes with impressive exactitude, resulting in a super tight, cleanly played version.
2015-09-05 Commerce City, CO 9:06 Another great version, but this one is quite different from MPP '15. Here, Trey deploys guitar effects, creating a very different tone to this rocking jam. The peak is solid as well, and many may prefer this style to the more traditional MPP one. Nice to have so many great versions to choose from.
2016-01-17 Riviera Maya, Quintana Roo, Mexico 9:36 Compared to the preceding two jam chart versions, this one reveals a third and new approach to "Roggae," as this one breaks into a swinging, blues-infused jam, accentuated by some guitar effects, but less than in Dick's '15. Strong Mike and Fish help bring this excellent version to a powerful peak.
2017-07-22 New York, NY 10:26 Beautiful "Baker's Dozen" version quickly assumes a measured, metered pace, affording all four musicians room to seemingly solo independently, yet in unison, resulting in that special sort of cohesion wherein the band uses music to channel their collective energy to uncover a particular charmed and enchanted space.
Jam chart versions are selected because of improvisational and other characteristics that distinguish these from typical versions of the song.
The jam chart team has highlighted some versions with a yellow background; these are the versions the team believes to be especially improvisational, or otherwise notable.
