Jam Chart for Rock and Roll (21 entries)

Date City Timing Notes
1998-10-31 Las Vegas, NV 13:12 Debut as part of the Velvet Underground's "Loaded" Halloween costume. First run is an upbeat rocker with an extended jam that stays pretty close to the "Rock And Roll" theme and groove. Released on Live Phish Vol. 16.
1999-12-31 Big Cypress, FL 30:23 This wide-ranging, 30-minute monster from Cypress starts off in an excellent bluesy groove, before quieting down to a percussive, groovy, organ-led cowbell movement with anthemic riffing from Trey. The jam then coasts along at a low simmer, with very quiet, introspective playing and massive bass bombs, before exploding into an epic, earth-shattering firestorm of a conclusion at 26:00.
2003-08-02 Limestone, ME 17:31 Intense straightforward playing breaks into a punchy and 2.0-style funky jam at 10:00 that continues until a -> to "Seven Below."
2003-12-02 Boston, MA 17:59 Very good, multi-section version breaks from "R&R" into a pulsing, funky and bluesy groove. From there, it settles with solid instrumental effects, before regaining momentum and -> to "Weekapaug." (w/o any "Mike's").
2004-04-16 Las Vegas, NV 12:01 Jam mellows after a bit and sustains a decent pulse with nice Page work. "Low Rider" teases.
2009-03-07 Hampton, VA 12:21 Departs from standard "R&R" at about 8:30, in a delicate, melodic foray that sets up nicely for segue to "Limb By Limb."
2009-08-01 Morrison, CO 13:43 Breaks into some great stop/start jamming. Fish keeps it crisp and clean.
2009-08-08 George, WA 22:37 A highly acclaimed performance from the early 3.0 period. While the jam ultimately reaches a magnificent conclusion, the 8 minutes leading up are somewhat plodding and monotone. Not on par with the superb "Sally" from the day before.
2009-11-21 Cincinnati, OH 16:13 Very good, funky version with some nice Page/Trey interplay. Extended spacey ending.
2010-06-26 Columbia, MD 17:35 A delicate, slightly spacey jam emerges from the standard and gradually builds in power and intensity. Then Mike and Trey shift direction, leading a nice "Moby Dick" jam at the end which mellows and > to "Free."
2010-08-06 Berkeley, CA 14:29 Great, multi-faceted jam with solid band interplay.
2010-10-22 Providence, RI 12:49 Very high quality jam that covers a lot of ground and -> to an equally fast moving "Carini."
2011-06-07 Mansfield, MA 16:46 Another excellent version with an extended jam that at various times is rhythmic, melodic, spacious, and powerful. Segue to "Mango Song" continues to draw praise from fans.
2011-06-17 Charlotte, NC 13:13 "A Love Supreme" tease is included in this outstanding version, which while subtle and spacey at times, is the "good" kind of musical space, requiring band-wide cohesion and coordinated improvisation. Segue to "Ghost."
2011-08-05 George, WA 19:55 Magnificent and improvisational jam features Page on the theremin and scary vocal effects from Mike. The jam has an upbeat opening that is eclipsed by dark and electric sections which conclude with a flawless -> to "Meatstick."
2011-12-28 New York, NY 12:18 The typical jam slows, and Page takes over on the B-3, leading a short, good foray with a nice rhythmic pop. -> to "NICU."
2012-08-15 Long Beach, CA 24:55 After breaking into a nice snappy, percussive bent, the playing settles down to quieter musing, briefly suspending rhythm in favor of pulsing sonar. But between 12:00 - 13:00, all four steer the ship back to the surface, slowing building into celebratory playing before venturing into more improvisational waters.
2012-08-24 Pelham, AL 15:55 Very good, multi-part jam. Begins in a snappy, rocking mode with a good "Live And Let Die" tease, grows in power, then mellows with a -> to "Lizards."
2013-07-12 Wantagh, NY 19:02 All in all, a quality, multi-section jam. Mike, Page and Fish are strong throughout. If you can just mentally tone down Trey's frequent use of the pitch shifter, it's all good. > to "2001."
2013-07-16 Alpharetta, GA 11:17 Short but good jam which breaks into a nice, snappy rhythmic groove, settles some, rebuilds and grows funky before -> to only the 2nd ever performance of Led Zeppelin's "Heartbreaker."
2013-08-03 San Francisco, CA 16:06 Bad Ass Mike kicks off this dynamic, multi-section jam with some really sick bass work. From there, it ranges far and wide before settling into quieter, but active playing which then > to "Steam."
